It’s a natural and environmentally-friendly fabric (made from recycled wood chips) called Viscose, we like to think of it as the fabric for the new millennium.
It wipes like a towel, dries like a chamois and absorbs like a sponge.
Viscose absorbs up to ten times its weight in liquid and releases over 92% when wrung out. The secret is in the thousands of tiny air cells in the material which trap liquid rather that absorbing it. So even when Viscose seems soaked, simply wring it out and it’s ready to dry again and again. This amazing natural fabric is versatile, durable, machine-washable, and even gets softer the more you use it. With all that going for it, it’s no wonder we’ve got disposable wipes, microfiber, and terry cloth throwing in the towel!
A Pacific Dry Goods Towl™ VERSUS Terry Cloth
Our Towls and sponges make terry cloth obsolete. When terry cloth is saturated it becomes virtually useless, a soggy wet lump that is slow to dry. Our sponges can easily be wrung out for use over and over till the job is done. They are remarkable “water magnets.” Whether it’s water, wine, gravy or oil, these sponges have an extra fast absorbing action that quickly wipes up any spill you can pour it’s way. A simple wringing will release all of the liquid absorbed. So even when the sponge is damp, it’s still ready to dry again and again... terry cloth just doesn’t compare to the performance of a Pacific Dry Goods Sponge.
A Pacific Dry Goods Viscose VERSUS Microfiber
Our Towls and sponges are the natural solution to your household projects! Unlike microfibers that are synthetic products (made from petrochemicals), our Towls are made from recycled wood chips. Our products absorb more than ten times their weight in liquid while microfibers will absorb something less than four times.
Microfibers pickup and hold grit, dirt, and dust so securely that to avoid damage to many surfaces they must be washed after every use. Our products can simply be rinsed out and used again and again for both the toughest jobs on the most delicate surfaces (And if specific washing instructions are not followed, microfiber can be rendered useless!). In short, our Towls offer unmatched natural performance and simplicity in use and in care.
A Pacific Dry Goods sponge™ VERSUS Chamois
Chamois, or “shammy” as it is commonly called, is made from the skin of animals, most typically, sheepskin. Our Towls are a superior, plant-based alternative to the animal-based Chamois cloths. In fact, Pacific Dry Goods tradename Towls and sponges contain absolutely no animal products and no animal by-products.
Chamois is subject to mildew since its does not wring out as easily and effectively as do our products; chamois have a distinct tendency to retain odor and mildew causing bacteria. In addition, chamois are a hassle to wash and dry, but our easy-care Towls and sponges can simply be tossed into the washing machine with your other household laundry!
After use and washing, our Towls remain soft and supple like a fine flannel. Chamois, on the other hand, typically becomes stiff-as-a-board after just one use.
The Ecological Aspects of Pacific Dry Goods' Viscose
Cellulose Fiber
Cellulose fibers are completely biodegradable under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and are decomposed by naturally occurring micro-organisms into CO2 and water.
Cellulose is generated during photosynthesis. Wood, a renewable raw material, is the basic material for our fibers.
Fiber Manufacturing
Beech wood, the raw material for our fibers, is harvested exclusively from forests that are under sustainable management in keeping with all forestry regulations.
